U2 - The Best of 1990-2000 & B-Sides [4400634380, US] (2002)

Album Review:

The second volume of U2's Best of Collection, covering the years 1990-2000, was released on November 4th, 2002. A limited edition 'Best of the B-sides' was also released, along with a new single Electrical Storm and, the following month, a 'Best Of 1990 - 2000' DVD. This second volume of U2's Best Of collection covered the years from 1990 to 2000 and its sixteen tracks are highlights of the albums Achtung Baby, Zooropa, Passengers: Original Soundtracks 1, Pop and All That You Can't Leave Behind. Two brand new tracks were also recorded for this set, Electrical Storm and The Hands That Built America featured on the soundtrack to the Martin Scorsese movie The Gangs Of New York. In addition, four songs, Discotheque, Gone, Numb and Staring At The Sun were substantially reworked by producer Mike Hedges.

The Best of 1990–2000 is the second greatest hits compilation by Irish rock band U2. Released on November 5, 2002, this is the limited version of The Best of 1990-2000. This version was available for order for one week only, and contained a bonus second disc, as well as a bonus DVD.

It includes two new songs. "Electrical Storm" was released as a single. "The Hands That Built America" appeared on the soundtrack to Martin Scorsese's Gangs of New York film (with a different, more traditional arrangement than the one here).

It is also the first full U2 release to include "Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me", a 1995 single originally contributed to the Batman Forever soundtrack, and "Miss Sarajevo", another 1995 single originally released on Original Soundtracks No. 1 and credited to "Passengers", a pseudonym used for the side project by U2, Brian Eno, and various guests.

Under the terms of the contract for the Best Of albums, which is separate from U2's album contract, these compilations have to be released under the Island label worldwide. This is the case even in the US, where the band is signed to Interscope.

Some notes on the differences between tracks:

Several differences have been noted between the tracks on this compilation and the various versions that had been released prior.

Miss Sarajevo: This is not the album version, nor the single version. This is the radio edit version previously found on only promotional singles of Miss Sarajevo.

Mysterious Ways: There is an alternate vocal in this version of the track. At 1:35 min the line 'She's the wave, she turns the tide, she sees the man inside the child' has been changed to 'She's the wave, she'll turn the tide, and no question, she knows why.' Likely mastered from a different vocal track.

Numb, Discotheque, Staring at the Sun, and Gone: All are new mixes of these tracks done specifically for this compilation. Gone also features a slightly different lyrical track from the original version. In the Best of version the line "What you thought was freedom just was greed" is different from the original "What you thought was freedom is just greed".

Salome (Zooromancer Remix): This is an edit of the previous versions of this track. The original mix was 8:02 in length. This version is 5:50 in length.

Numb (Gimme Some More Dignity Remix): This is an edit of the previous available versions. Previous available versions of the mix were 8:11 and 8:47, this version is 5:50.

Discotheque (Hexidecimal Mix): Another edit of the original remix. The original was 7:21, a test pressing only edit was approximately 4:00, this version is new at 5:45.
